Dr. John D. Witvliet is a Professor of Worship, Theology, and Ministry Studies at Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary, serving as Director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW). He holds a PhD in Liturgical Studies from the University of Notre Dame, alongside degrees in music and theology from Calvin University and other institutions.
His research focuses on biblical and systematic theology of worship, liturgical practices across cultures, music/the arts in worship, and pastoral leadership. Notable works include Worship Seeking Understanding, The Biblical Psalms in Christian Worship, and contributions to worship resources like The Worship Sourcebook and Psalms for All Seasons.
Witvliet leads CICW’s initiatives such as the Calvin Symposium on Worship and Vital Worship Grants Program, collaborating with global denominations and academic institutions. He has received awards from organizations including the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and All Belong. His teaching spans worship theology, liturgical history, and intercultural learning, with a focus on forming worship leaders and shaping congregational practices.
His advocacy includes promoting inclusive worship practices, anti-racism in liturgy, and the role of music in fostering communal faith. Recent scholarship addresses trauma-informed worship, trinitarian sacramental theology, and global worship practices, reflecting his commitment to both academic rigor and pastoral relevance.
