John C. Winters

John C. Winters is the DPAA Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, George Mason University. His research examines how Indigenous peoples and institutions shaped colonial American culture and memory in the 18th and 19th centuries.

His recent publications reveal consistent engagement with Indigenous representation in historical narratives, media portrayals of Native communities, and the political construction of memory. The 2023 monograph on Iroquois influence and 2022 article on Harriet Maxwell Converse demonstrate how cultural institutions and media actively shaped public understanding of Indigenous history during America's formative periods.

Winters holds an active National Park Service research grant. While not currently listed as advising students, his work at the Roy Rosenzweig Center involves collaborative digital history initiatives that bridge academic research and public engagement.

As a core contributor to the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, he participates in digital public humanities projects that transform historical accessibility and foster community-driven historical interpretation through innovative technological platforms.
