Professor John Buchanan is the Head of Discipline of Business Analytics at the University of Sydney Business School and Co-Director of the John Grill Institute of Projects. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (1st Class Honours) from ANU (1982), followed by a LLB, Post Graduate Diploma in Economics (ANU), and a PhD in Work and Organisational Studies from the University of Sydney. His academic journey combined history, law, and economics to form a multidisciplinary foundation.
His research focuses on the evolution of market societies, labour contract dynamics, and workforce development in global contexts including Australia, the US, UK, Europe, China, and Southeast Asia. He emphasizes analytical skills developed through historical study, including narrative coherence, cross-disciplinary integration, and 'analytical humility'.
Prior roles include Australian Public Service policy work (1985–1991) and leadership in a university-based labour market research centre (1992–2014). His current roles leverage historical insights to address modern organizational and policy challenges.
