John Bruns is a Professor of Film Studies at the College of Charleston and a faculty affiliate of the Women's and Gender Studies Program. He is known for his work on comedy as a cognitive and cultural mode of thought, including his book Loopholes: Reading Comically (2013). His recent publications focus on Alfred Hitchcock's films, with articles in the Hitchcock Annual and contributions to film history textbooks.

His research interests include film history, theory, and criticism, cultural studies, literary theory, comedy, and feminist theory. He explores comedy as a transformative lens for understanding societal structures and has taught courses such as ENGL 390: Special Topics in Film - Alfred Hitchcock and ENGL 390: American Cinema of the 1970s.
His recent publications (2021-2023) analyze Hitchcock's works through comedic and feminist frameworks, while his earlier books and chapters examine topics like the grotesque in comedy and historical film analysis. John is currently working on a book exploring André Bazin's writings and Steven Spielberg's films.
