John Ball is a Lecturer in the Department of Music at the School of Languages, Arts and Societies, University of Sheffield. He specializes in North Indian Classical Music, performing on tabla and santoor, and serves as Director of the University of Sheffield Indian Music Ensemble.

His research explores the adaptation of Indian music skills and aesthetics to Western and non-Indian instruments, with a focus on improvisation through Indian rhythmic and melodic concepts. He collaborates with ensembles and artists across diverse genres, including Rafiki Jazz, Mishra, Balbir Singh Dance Company, and Pandit Pratap Pawar.
John has worked with notable artists such as Sarathy Korwar, Jarvis Cocker, and Richard Hawley, contributing to interdisciplinary projects that blend Western Classical, Jazz, Folk, Pop, and Indian traditions.
