John Baenziger is a Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa. His primary focus is on the structural and functional analysis of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs), particularly nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which are implicated in neurological and neuromuscular disorders. He has been affiliated with the University of Ottawa since July 2001.
His research combines biophysical tools like cryo-EM and electrophysiology to study nAChR structure-function relationships. Key interests include lipid modulation of ion channels, receptor activation mechanisms, and disease-related dysfunction. Notable contributions include work on lipid-binding sites and allosteric modulation in nAChRs.
Baenziger has advised multiple students, including PhD candidates Anna and Mackenzie, and collaborates with labs like daCosta’s. Recent highlights include a Nature Communications publication (2024) and recognition as an IUPAB Councillor. His lab also focuses on translating structural insights into therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders.
