John Bacon is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of East Anglia's School of Environmental Sciences, holding a part-time role (one day/week) to foster collaborations between UEA and Cefas scientists. He also leads Cefas' Ocean Processes and Systems group, focusing on hydrodynamic and geomorphological modeling. His expertise spans coastal processes, sediment transport, and numerical modeling of waves and tides. Previously, he worked as a Civil Engineer, earned a B.Sc. in Geophysical Sciences (UEA, 1996), and completed a PhD in Coastal Processes under Prof. Chris Vincent (2004). He introduced Telemac and DELFT3D systems at Cefas, enhancing high-resolution coastal modeling. Notable projects include studying the 2013 storm surge response and deep-sea oil spill dynamics in UK waters.
External roles include Honorary Secretary of the Challenger Society for Marine Science (2014–2017). Research collaborations involve deploying Cefas' ocean models on UEA's Grace HPC system. His work bridges academic and applied marine science, emphasizing environmental monitoring and renewable energy impacts.
