John Axelsson is a Senior Lecturer (Docent) at Karolinska Institutet, leading the interdisciplinary Sleep, Cognition and Health Research Group within the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. His work bridges sleep medicine, cognitive neuroscience, and psychoneuroimmunology to address critical questions about how modern 24/7 society impacts human biology, cognition, and health.
- Research Focus: Sleep deprivation effects on immune function, social interactions, and cognitive processes
- Methodology: Combines brain imaging, bacterial endotoxin injections, and facial analysis
- Key Questions: Sleep homeostasis, sickness behavior, chronotype differences
Research Trends in his recent publications show strong emphasis on sleep deprivation's effects on cognition, inflammatory biomarkers in psychiatric symptoms, and evolutionary aspects of disease detection. His work explores neuroimmunology, social neuroscience, and chronobiology through fMRI, olfactory studies, and behavioral experiments.
Grants from major Swedish funders like the Swedish Research Council and Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation support projects on topics ranging from shift work health impacts to metacognitive effects of sleep loss. The group actively trains students through thesis projects and experimental research.
