Mats J. Olsson is a Professor of Experimental Psychology at Karolinska Institutet since 2008, currently serving in leadership roles including Acting Head of Department (2017-2018) and Head of Division (2016-2017). He has held academic positions at Uppsala University (1996-2008) where he was also Professor of Psychology and Deputy Head of Department, with prior roles as Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University and Researcher at Stockholm University.

Olsson's research focuses on human olfactory perception, spanning psychophysics, memory, metamemory, and more recently chemical communication and cognitive neuroscience. His work explores how humans detect sickness through smell, the neurocognitive basis of olfactory processing, and social chemosensory signaling. He has published ~70 papers in high-impact journals including PNAS, Psychological Science, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B, with an H-index of 31.
