John Allport is a Professor of Turbocharger Engineering at the University of Huddersfield, based in the School of Computing and Engineering's Department of Engineering. He leads the Turbocharger Research Institute and directs the Energy Integration Laboratory, focusing on sustainable energy solutions using biofuels and waste-to-energy processes. His career spans over 25 years in automotive engineering, including roles at Cummins Turbo Technologies and a PhD in Computer Aided Engineering from the University of Bradford under an Industrial Fellowship of the Royal 1851 Commission. He holds over 20 patents and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Education: BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham (1985), PhD in Computer Aided Engineering from the University of Bradford (2000s). Research interests include turbocharger design, vibration analysis, sustainable energy systems, and polymer applications in engineering components.
Recent publications emphasize advancements in compressor aerodynamics, noise reduction techniques, and energy harvesting systems. His work addresses challenges in turbine blade flutter, piezoelectric energy generation, and corrosion-resistant materials for extreme environments. Awards include the Industrial Fellowship of the Royal 1851 Commission and Fellow status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
John advises on 14 doctoral projects and chairs committees for academic standards and accreditation. He actively promotes engineering education, particularly gender diversity initiatives in STEM. His Energy Integration Laboratory tests organic waste-to-energy processes at pilot scale, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals on clean energy and environmental sustainability.
