Yabin Liu serves as a Research Fellow and Principal Investigator at the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering under the prestigious Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Brunel Fellowship (2023-2026). He joined Cambridge in November 2024 after completing a research associate position at the University of Edinburgh (2021-2023) on the EPSRC Morphing Blades project.
He earned his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University's Department of Energy and Power Engineering in 2021, receiving both the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis prize and Beijing Outstanding Graduate prize. His doctoral work focused on tip leakage vortex control in turbomachinery, complemented by a year-long fully-sponsored visit to Cambridge.
His research centers on fluid dynamics and flow control for renewable energy systems, specifically targeting vortex-induced challenges in tidal/wind turbines, turbomachinery, and aerial/underwater vehicles. Key areas include cavitation mitigation, wake control, noise reduction, bio-inspired flow designs, and turbulence coherent structures analysis within offshore energy applications.
Major recognitions include:
- Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Brunel Fellowship (sole annual awardee)
- HiWin Doctoral Dissertation Award (top Mechanical Engineering prize across Greater China)
- Chung-Hua Wu Outstanding Graduate Prize (9 recipients nationwide in China)
- ScholarGPS Highly-Ranked Scholar (top 0.05% globally)
- Young Professionals Green Energy Awards winner
As PI, he has secured over £800,000 in competitive funding including a Royal Society ISPF International Collaboration Award, EPSRC Supergen ORE Hub Flexible Funding, and Lund University 'Get Started Funding'. He maintains active collaborations with Oxford, Edinburgh, Birmingham, TU Delft, Lund, and Tokyo universities plus industry partners in green energy. His Fluids Research Group within the Energy, Fluids and Turbomachinery Division focuses on translating fundamental fluid dynamics into practical renewable energy solutions through international partnerships.
