John A. Downing serves as Director of Minnesota Sea Grant and Professor in the Department of Biology with the Large Lakes Observatory at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). His work integrates research, education, and science policy focused on freshwater systems across the Great Lakes region and globally.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Biology from McGill University, an M.S. in Zoology from North Dakota State University, and a B.S. in Biology from Hamline University.
Dr. Downing's research spans limnology, aquatic ecology, biogeochemistry, and fisheries management, with emphasis on lake restoration, eutrophication, harmful algae blooms, carbon cycling, and biodiversity conservation. His work addresses critical challenges in water quality, climate change impacts, and sustainable resource management through interdisciplinary approaches.
He has held significant leadership roles including Immediate Past President of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) and Immediate Past Chair of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents. As Minnesota Sea Grant Director, he oversees initiatives like the Great Lakes Aquaculture Collaborative, Aquaculture Market Study, and Minnesota Lakes Ice-Out Clock.
His outreach includes regular Director's Columns on topics like water purification, ice safety, and social costs of water pollution, alongside media engagements with CBS News, KARE 11, and NPR discussing Minnesota's lakes and freshwater science.
