Dr. Donn Branstrator is a Professor and Associate Department Head at the University of Minnesota Duluth's Swenson College of Science and Engineering. His office is located at 15 Swenson Science Building in Duluth, MN. He holds a B.A. from Lawrence University (1987) and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1993).
Branstrator's research focuses on freshwater food webs, ecological impacts of invasive species (especially Bythotrephes), and zooplankton dynamics. He employs paleolimnology, field experiments, and lake monitoring to address aquatic ecosystem management challenges. Current investigations include invasive species control strategies and disruptions in zooplankton migration patterns.
His recent publications (2021-2022) cluster around invasive species ecology, limnology, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, with recurring themes in Great Lakes ecosystems and sediment-based historical analysis. Notable methodological approaches include field experiments, sediment coring, and ecosystem decoupling studies.
He teaches undergraduate courses (General Ecology, Lake Ecology, Communication in Biology) and graduate seminars (Limnology, Professional Ethics). Current graduate advisees include Katherine Bruesewitz, Megan Corum, and Nichole DeWeese, all pursuing MS degrees in Water Resources Science with research on invasive species impacts.
