Frank Wilhelm is a Professor of Limnology and Department Head of Fish and Wildlife Sciences at the University of Idaho's College of Natural Resources. He also serves as Associate Director of the Center for Research on Invasive Species. His research focuses on lake management, aquatic restoration, and the ecological impacts of non-native species. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Environmental Science from the University of Alberta (1999), an M.S. in Watershed Ecosystems from Trent University (1994), and a B.S. in Biology/Environmental Resource Science from Trent University (1991).
Wilhelm's research interests include limnology, food web dynamics, and the effects of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. His work has addressed issues such as cyanobacterial blooms, sediment nutrient dynamics in mining-impacted lakes, and the socioeconomic impacts of invasive species like Eurasian watermilfoil. He has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Alumni Award of Excellence (2023, 2019) and the Jim LaBounty Best Paper Award (2022).
Wilhelm leads projects such as quantifying sediment resuspension from boat activity in Lake Coeur d’Alene and evaluating aeration systems to mitigate harmful algal blooms in Willow Creek Reservoir. His outreach efforts emphasize service-learning in limnology education and community-driven water quality initiatives.
