John A. Demetracopoulos is Professor of Byzantine and Scholastic Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Patras, Greece. Since 2024 he also serves as the elected Director of the Linos Benakis Centre for Greek and Latin Philosophical Literature and has been Vice-President of the Department and Director of its Postgraduate Programme “Theoretical and Practical Philosophy” (2023/24–2024/25). He previously held the ranks of Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the same university and has been a part-time tutor at the Hellenic Open University since 2007/08.

- PhD in Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2001) – Dissertation: “Aristotle’s Categories and the ‘Nomina Divina’ in Anselm of Canterbury” (supervisor: Prof. Emer. D.N. Koutras)
Research Interests:
His work focuses on Byzantine and Medieval Latin philosophy, theology and philology, especially the interaction between Greek and Latin philosophical traditions in the Middle Ages. He investigates Thomas Aquinas’ reception in Byzantium, Palamite and anti-Palamite thought, translation activity from Latin into Greek, and manuscript evidence of philosophical exchanges during the Late Byzantine and post-Byzantine eras.

He sits on the editorial boards of Corpus Christianorum – Series Graeca (Brepols) and Byzantinisches Archiv – Series Philosophica (De Gruyter), among others, and has refereed for numerous European funding bodies.
