John (Ray) Proctor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance at Tulane University. He holds a BA in English from Webster University, an MFA in Acting from West Virginia University, and a PhD in Theatre Research with a focus on Shakespeare Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Proctor’s research examines intersections of class, race, and integration in mid-20th-century theatre, particularly through his dissertation on Paul Robeson’s 1942 production of Othello. He is also an accomplished actor, with notable roles including Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Peter in Lorraine Hansberry’s Les Blancs, and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. He performed the title role in Othello in multiple cities and co-authored the play Out Loud, which received six 2014 Black Theatre Alliance nominations.
