Dr. Johannes Reiche is an Associate Professor and leader of the Radar Remote Sensing team at Wageningen University's Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing. He specializes in radar remote sensing for monitoring tropical forest ecosystems, focusing on deforestation, land use change, and multi-sensor data integration. His work includes developing the RADD forest disturbance alert system and contributing to global initiatives like GFOI. Reiche holds a PhD (2015) and MSc (2011) from Wageningen University and the University of Jena. He teaches radar remote sensing in the MSc Geo-Information Science program and actively promotes open data access and capacity building. His research emphasizes near-real-time monitoring using Sentinel-1 data, with applications in environmental policy and conservation. Key projects include NextGenCarbon, World AgroCommodities, and Open-Earth-Monitor. Reiche collaborates internationally, representing the land community in ESA's Sentinel-1 advisory group.
- Education: PhD in Geo-Information Science (Wageningen, 2015), MSc in Geography (University of Jena, 2011)
Research interests span radar techniques, tropical forest dynamics, and environmental informatics. His publications (over 70 articles) focus on SAR-based disturbance detection, deforestation drivers, and satellite data fusion. He leads teams developing operational monitoring tools for global forest conservation efforts.
