Johannes Preiser-Kapeller is a Senior Research Associate and Deputy Head of the Department at the Division of Byzantine Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences (since 2015). He holds a Privatdozent (External Lecturer) position at the University of Vienna in Byzantine Studies and Global History. His career includes roles at institutions like the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (2013-2015) and visiting professorships globally.
Education includes a Habilitation in Byzantine Studies and Global History (University of Vienna, 2021), a PhD (2006), and Magister (2002), all from the University of Vienna.
Research focuses on Byzantine history in a global context, environmental/climate history, network analysis, and complexity theory. Notable projects include the ENCHANT grant (2023-2026) and leadership in the 'EurAsian Transformations' cluster.
