Johannes Persson is Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Lund University's Department of Philosophy and serves as Dean of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology since 2018. His academic career spans multiple leadership positions including former head of the Department of Philosophy (2001-2007) and Department of Educational Sciences (2011-2014), as well as program coordinator for Lund University's Postdoctoral Program (2009-2015). He previously held a visiting fellowship at the Center for Philosophy of Science, University of Pittsburgh in 2007.
Persson's research focuses on the intersection of philosophy of science, evidence-formation, decision-making processes, causality, and risk philosophy. His work examines how different types of knowledge are utilized in real-world decision contexts, particularly in sustainability and healthcare domains. He has made significant contributions to understanding the Swedish concept of 'proven experience' and its integration with scientific evidence in legal and policy contexts, as well as exploring existential dimensions of sustainability.
Persson has led and participated in major interdisciplinary research initiatives including 'Science and Proven Experience' (2015-2021) and the Linnaeus program 'LUCID' (2008-2018), which studied the integration of social and natural dimensions of sustainability. His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on conceptual clarity in environmental philosophy, evidence-based decision-making, and the epistemological foundations of sustainability science.
His academic leadership extends to chairing the Academic Appointments Board and Faculty Board for the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology, where he influences institutional direction and academic standards across multiple departments including Philosophy, History, Communication and Media, and Educational Sciences.
