Erik Persson is an Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities and Theology, Lund University. His academic career spans over 15 years since completing his PhD in 2008 with a thesis on assigning value and moral status to species. He maintains an active research profile with recent publications extending to 2025 and teaches courses including FPRA22 (Practical Philosophy: Level 2/Continuation Course).
Dr. Persson's educational background includes a Doctorate in Philosophy from Lund University (2008), preceded by a Licentiate thesis in 2006 on similar topics. His academic journey shows a consistent focus on ethical theory and its practical applications across various domains.
His research interests center on applied ethics, with particular emphasis on environmental ethics, AI ethics, space ethics, and the philosophical dimensions of astrobiology. Dr. Persson explores how ethical frameworks can address contemporary challenges related to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, artificial intelligence development, and space exploration. His work often bridges theoretical philosophy with practical policy considerations, examining questions of responsibility distribution, planetary protection, and the moral status of non-human entities.
Dr. Persson's publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output across multiple interdisciplinary domains. His work shows a clear trajectory from early research on extinction ethics toward increasingly diverse applications in space ethics, AI ethics, and climate adaptation ethics. The interdisciplinary nature of his research is evident in collaborations with scholars from environmental science, botany, space science, and technology fields.
Dr. Persson actively participates in research projects including "ReClAd: Responsibility for Climate Adaptation Across Political Levels, Sectors and Public-Private Boundaries" (2022-2026) and "Space Humanities" (ongoing since 2021). He has organized numerous workshops and seminars, including the "Second stakeholder workshop in the project Sustainable Distribution of Responsibility for Climate Adaptation" (2023) and the exhibition "Vem ska bort? En utställning om invasiva främmande växter" (2021) on invasive alien plants.
His work contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action, responsible consumption and production, and life on land. Dr. Persson's research on climate adaptation responsibility distribution addresses critical governance challenges in implementing sustainable development policies at local levels.
