Johannes Lipps is a Professor of Classical Archaeology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His research focuses on Roman architecture, ornamentation, and urban planning in the Roman provinces, particularly north of the Alps. He leads the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1391 project on 'Other Aesthetics' and the Academy Project disiecta membra on Roman architecture in Germany. His work bridges ancient and early modern reception studies, with a notable habilitation-equivalent monograph on the stucco ceiling of the House of Augustus (2018).
Key research themes include cultural appropriation processes, transcription of artistic forms, and urban dynamics in Roman colonies. His recent publications analyze diversity in Roman cult sites, architectural hybridity in Meninx (Libya), and material transfers between Italy and the provinces.
