Johannes Junge Ruhland is an Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, an MA from King's College London, and a BA from the University of Geneva. His research focuses on medieval French literature, manuscript studies, historiography, and debate literature, emphasizing a 'manuscript-first' approach to historical narratives and genre analysis. He is currently developing a book project on medieval historical manuscripts and co-editing a volume on 'Making History with Manuscripts in Medieval and Early Modern Europe.' Recent publications include articles in Medium Ævum, French Studies, and Romania.
His teaching emphasizes skill-building in writing and critical thinking, with courses on medieval literature, manuscript culture, and debates on love and gender. He has advised undergraduate and graduate students and is a Fellow of the Medieval Institute at Notre Dame. His offices are located in Decio Hall, and he maintains active research collaborations across disciplines.
