Tim William Machan is the Mary Lee Duda Professor of Literature at the University of Notre Dame, where he serves as a Professor of English. His work bridges medieval literature and historical English linguistics, with a focus on theoretical and practical intersections in Norse, Latin, French, and English traditions.
- Education: PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1984), MA in English Language and Medieval Literature from the University of Durham (1979), BA in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1978).
Machan’s research examines medieval language and literature through codicology, multilingualism, and cultural contact, particularly English’s interaction with Norse, Latin, and French. His historical linguistics work traces institutional responses to language change, shifts in dialect status, and persistent medieval language attitudes into modernity. Recent projects include analyzing English’s emergence in multilingual America (1759–1850) and mythological language narratives.
His publications, including English Begins at Jamestown (2022) and Northern Memories (2020), reflect interdisciplinary engagement with historical sociolinguistics, textual criticism, and manuscript studies. Upcoming works include Languages, Legends, and American Dreams (2026) and Mythologies of English (2027), guest-editing the Journal of English Linguistics on language historiography.
