Prof. Dr. Johannes Buchner is a full professor of Biotechnology at the Technische Universität München (TUM), affiliated with the TUM School of Natural Sciences. He leads the Chair of Biotechnology and has held academic roles including Dean of the Department of Chemistry (2003–2006) and Vice President of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM). His research focuses on molecular chaperones, protein folding mechanisms, and their roles in cellular stress responses and disease. Key projects include the Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPSM) and the SFB 1035 on protein conformational regulation.
Research Interests:
- Protein folding and quality control
- Chaperone machinery (Hsp70/Hsp90 systems)
- Biochemical basis of amyloidosis and cataracts
- Biotechnological applications in antibody production
Awards:
- Hans Neurath Prize (2011)
- Membership in Leopoldina (2006) and Bavarian Academy (2010)
- EMBO Membership (2014)
- Multiple editorial roles in journals like JBC and FEBS Open Bio
Labs/Teams: Leads the Buchner Research Group studying chaperone systems and protein quality control. Collaborates on projects like the SFB 1035 consortium. His work bridges fundamental biochemistry with translational applications in medicine and biotechnology.
