Johanna Pejlare

Johanna Pejlare is a Senior Lecturer in the Algebra and Geometry department at Chalmers University of Technology's Department of Mathematical Sciences. Her academic work bridges historical mathematical research with contemporary mathematics education practice.

Her primary research focuses on the history of Swedish mathematics education, particularly examining early Swedish mathematics textbooks from the 17th and 18th centuries. She investigates how mathematical concepts were introduced in Sweden and analyzes the historical relationship between algebra and geometry, with special attention to figures like Anders Gabriel Duhre, who translated Euclid's Elements into Swedish in 1721 while placing geometric theorems in algebraic contexts.

Pejlare actively contributes to educational development through the Akelius Math Learning Lab, a collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology, University of Gothenburg, and Akelius Math AB, which develops freely available digital teaching materials for use in refugee camps and resource-scarce schools. Her recent research includes cross-national comparative studies of equation solving strategies, programming integration in mathematics education, and historical perspectives on algebra education.

She has led significant projects including 'Programming for learning in mathematics' (2019-2021) and participated in the VR project 'Towards research-based teaching in algebra' (2016-2019). Her work demonstrates strong international collaboration, particularly with Nordic researchers.
