Johan Van Aswegen serves as Senior Critic in the Jewelry and Metalsmithing department at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he has taught since relocating from Germany to the United States in 1996. Born in Namibia, Africa, he specializes in creating monumental-scale jewelry that functions as personal markers through historical references and desert-inspired color variations.
His educational background includes a BA from the University of Stellenbosch and an MFA from Akademie Bildenden Kunst in Munich, Germany, where he trained under Professor Hermann Junger. Research interests span:
