Sara Rich is an Associate Professor in the Theory and History of Art and Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she integrates her identity as a citizen of the Waccamaw Indian People with interdisciplinary scholarship spanning maritime archaeology, art history, and speculative fiction.
Her research focuses on:
- Maritime archaeology
- Multispecies architecture
- Ecological humanities
- Indigenous studies
- Speculative realism
She teaches courses examining anti-colonialism, sci-art, shipwrecks, and prehistoric/Indigenous arts and cultures. Recent publications include the monographs Mushroom (Bloomsbury Object Lessons series) and Shipwreck Hauntography: Underwater Ruins and the Uncanny (Amsterdam University Press Maritime Humanities series), alongside essays in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, Journal of Aesthetic Education, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Heritage, and Contemporary Philosophy for Maritime Archaeology (which she co-edited).
