Johan Gustavsson is a Swedish artist, curator, and educator based in The Hague, Netherlands. He has served as a lecturer at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) since 2006, specializing in the Bachelor Photography program for both full-time and part-time students. Additionally, he co-directs the independent art space 1646 and co-founded initiatives including The Alternative Art Guide and The Hague Contemporary.
His professional focus centers on contemporary art curation and interdisciplinary artistic practices, with significant emphasis on photography as both medium and conceptual framework. As Cultural Ambassador for The Hague, he bridges institutional and grassroots art communities through international collaborations with museums, galleries, and festivals. His curatorial leadership extends to major projects like the Mondriaan Fonds' Prospects exhibition series at Rotterdam's Van Nelle Factory.
Within academia, Gustavsson shapes emerging artists through KABK's Photography department while contributing to the academy's research ecosystem through lectorates in Design, Time-based Practice, and Film. His practice actively connects pedagogy with real-world artistic production through platforms like 1646, which serves as both exhibition space and professional development hub for early-career artists.
