Johan Fornäs is a Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the School of Culture and Education, Södertörn University, Sweden. He previously served as Professor of Mediated Culture at Linköping University (2003-2009) and held academic positions at Stockholm University (1992-2000) and the National Institute for Working Life (2000-2003). He was founding director of the Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS) at Linköping University from 2002-2012.

Prof. Fornäs specializes in cultural theory, cultural studies, and the cultural dimensions of mediatization, focusing on intermedial interactions between cultural genres and media forms, as well as intersectional identity dynamics. His research explores cultural mediation, popular music, and European identities through transnational narratives and symbols.
He has conducted numerous major research projects, established international academic networks, and authored/edited several dozen books and approximately 300 academic articles. His scholarly contributions include membership on high-ranking research funding bodies such as the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation (2008-2012).
