Dr. Johan Elverskog is a Professor and Chair of Religious Studies at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. His research focuses on the history of Buddhism across Asia, environmental dimensions of religious practices, and Mongolian civilization. Current projects include an environmental history of Buddhism (under contract with University of Washington Press) and an edited volume on the Mongol tradition (under contract with Columbia University Press).
Elverskog’s work has been supported by prestigious institutions including the American Council of Learned Societies, Ford Foundation, and Mellon Foundation. He has held fellowships at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies, and Ruhr Universität’s Käte Hamburger Kolleg. His publications span seven books and numerous articles, several translated into Chinese, Korean, and Russian.
He teaches courses on Buddhism, Chinese religions, Tibetan cultural history, and Islamic studies. His research bridges disciplinary boundaries, integrating environmental humanities with traditional religious studies methodologies. Ongoing projects emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to Mongolian studies and Buddhist material culture.
