Johan Bengtsson-Palme

Johan Bengtsson-Palme is an Assistant Professor at the Division of Systems Biology at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg and affiliated with the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg. He is a DDLS Fellow funded by the Wallenberg DDLS initiative and leads a research group focused on data-driven microbiology and microbial ecology. His work bridges bioinformatics, molecular methods, and ecological theory to address critical issues in human and environmental health.

His research spans three interconnected areas: pathogenicity mechanisms, effects of disrupted microbiome interactions, and antibiotic resistance development and spread. He combines large-scale experimental work, metagenomics, and bioinformatics to investigate how environmental factors influence microbial communities. His lab develops essential bioinformatics tools like ITSx and Metaxa that are widely used in microbial ecology research.
