Professor Joerg Wiedenmann is a leading academic in Biological Oceanography at the University of Southampton, heading the Coral Reef Laboratory. His research focuses on coral-algal symbiosis, coral bleaching mechanisms, nutrient dynamics, and adaptation to extreme environments. He has pioneered studies on symbiont species enabling corals to survive in hottest reefs and introduced novel fluorescent imaging tools for medical research.
Research interests include coral reef ecology, photophysiology, and environmental stress responses. Recent work highlights ALAN's disruptive effects on coral behavior and spawning, and the role of seabirds in reef resilience. He supervises PhD students and leads projects funded by the EU and NERC, such as the Microns2Reefs initiative exploring coral biomineralization.
Key awards include the PhD thesis Award from University Society (Ulm) and a Baden-Württemberg graduate fellowship. His teaching emphasizes interactive learning approaches to enhance student engagement. He maintains active collaborations through the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and other interdisciplinary groups.
