Dr. Gal Eyal is an Adjunct Senior Fellow in the School of the Environment at The University of Queensland. His research focuses on coral reef ecology, with a particular emphasis on mesophotic coral ecosystems, coral symbiosis dynamics, and the impacts of environmental stressors such as climate change and pollution. He has contributed extensively to understanding the biology of deep-water corals, including their reproductive strategies, fluorescence functions, and resilience to bleaching events. Collaborations with institutions like the University of Queensland and international teams have advanced knowledge in coral genetics, reef geomorphology, and the application of advanced technologies for coral reef monitoring.
Key research interests include mesophotic coral community transitions, coral-algal symbiont interactions, and the ecological roles of fluorescence in deep reef environments. His work integrates field studies, genomic analyses, and technological innovations such as photogrammetry for coral habitat mapping. Dr. Eyal’s research spans regions like the Red Sea, Great Barrier Reef, and the Pacific, addressing critical questions about coral reef conservation and the impacts of environmental disturbances.
His publications highlight contributions to coral reproductive biology, the effects of light and temperature on coral health, and the ecological significance of mesophotic reefs as refugia. He actively engages with global mesophotic ecosystem research networks, including the Mesophotic.org repository, to synthesize and disseminate scientific findings on these understudied ecosystems.
