Joel Thiessen, PhD, is a Professor of Sociology at Ambrose University, serving as Chair of the Social Sciences Department and Director of the Flourishing Congregations Institute. His research focuses on congregations, religious nones, millennials, and religion in Canada, with a particular interest in faith transmission, mental health within religious communities, and spiritual yearning. Thiessen has authored/co-authored six books, including None of the Above: Nonreligious Identity in the US and Canada (2020) and The Meaning of Sunday (2015). He holds a PhD from the University of Waterloo, with earlier degrees from Nazarene University College.
His academic journey began at Nazarene University College, followed by MA and PhD studies at the University of Waterloo. Thiessen joined Ambrose University in 2008, contributing significantly to sociology and religious studies. His work bridges academia and public engagement, with frequent speaking invitations and media appearances.
Thiessen’s current projects explore flourishing congregations, generational faith transmission, and the impact of nonreligion on societal values. He also leads the Flourishing Congregations Institute, dedicated to researching and supporting religious communities. Personal interests include drumming, sports, and travel with his wife and dog.
