Dr. Josh Bullock is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology at Kingston University, part of the School of Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences within the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. He specializes in researching true crime media's societal impact, the sociology of religion/nonreligion, and millennial belief systems. His recent work includes a mixed-methods study on psychic event attendees' worldviews (2023–24) and analyses of nationalism and vaccine hesitancy during the pandemic.
Education: PhD (Kingston University), MSc Social and Cultural Theory (University of Bristol), BA Media and Cultural Studies/Sociology (University of the West of England).
Research interests focus on how nonreligious individuals navigate belief systems through practices like New Age spirituality, the psychological roots of nationalism, and the sociological implications of true crime storytelling. His work bridges secularization theory with contemporary cultural trends, such as the Sunday Assembly—a secular congregation analyzed in his doctoral research.
Notable awards include 2021's Best Lecturer and Best Use of Technology, 2023 Teaching Excellence, and the 2024 Faculty of Business and Social Sciences Lecturer of the Year.
His publications span topics like vaccine hesitancy in the UK, millennial nonreligious spiritualities, and the socio-cognitive drivers of populism. Current projects explore grassroots spiritual phenomena and the interplay between science, spirituality, and well-being.
