Joel Swanson is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder's ATLAS Institute, specializing in design, creative coding, and typography. He leads the TYPO Lab, exploring text-based technologies and their intersections with language, materiality, and technology. Swanson holds a BFA in Digital Art from CU Boulder and an MFA in Computing and the Arts from UC San Diego.
- Affiliations: Tenured in the Herbst Program for Engineering, Ethics & Society; Courtesy appointment in the Intermedia Arts Writing and Performance PhD Program.
His interdisciplinary work investigates how linguistic tools and technologies shape meaning through sculpture and paper-based works. Key exhibitions include the 57th Venice Biennale, MSU Broad Art Museum, and solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. He has held residencies at La Napoule Art Foundation, HANGAR, Banff Center, and RedLine Contemporary Art Center.
