Sebastian Casalaina is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Colorado. His research focuses on algebraic geometry, with emphasis on algebraic curves, abelian varieties, cubic threefolds, vector bundles, moduli spaces, and Hodge theory. He has contributed to foundational work on the geometry of moduli spaces of cubic surfaces and threefolds, Prym varieties, and intermediate Jacobians. He frequently collaborates with scholars such as Jeff Achter, Samuel Grushevsky, and Charles Vial.
His recent work includes studies on categorical Torelli theorems for cubic threefolds, moduli compactifications, and descent properties of Abel-Jacobi maps. He has organized conferences like the Western Algebraic Geometry Symposium (WAGS) and contributed to initiatives like the DeLong Lectures and FRAGMENT seminar series. His teaching spans undergraduate courses (Discrete Math, Linear Algebra) and graduate topics (Algebraic Geometry, Homological Algebra).
Prof. Casalaina serves as a referee for journals including Compositio Mathematica and Journal of Algebraic Geometry. His research has been supported through grants involving algebraic stacks, degenerations, and Hodge structures. He mentors graduate students in algebraic geometry and has advised on topics related to moduli spaces and arithmetic geometry.
