Joel S. Kaminsky is the Morningstar Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of Religion at Smith College. He has held visiting professorships at Duke, Harvard, and Yale Divinity School, and served as a Visiting Jewish Studies Research Scholar at Durham University (England) three times. His academic work bridges Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Hebrew Bible.
- Ph.D. and M.A., University of Chicago Divinity School
- B.A., Miami University
His research focuses on narrative theology in the Hebrew Bible and Rabbinic literature, with particular emphasis on divine election and how Jews and Christians have interpreted these texts over two millennia. He explores family rivalries in Genesis, prophetic messages, and theological implications of biblical election.
Key trends in his publications include ecumenical scholarship on shared sacred texts, comparative analysis of Jewish and Christian theological frameworks, and addressing modern democratic critiques of biblical chosenness. His work often integrates historical criticism with theological reflection.
Students mentored by Kaminsky frequently pursue graduate studies, and he has significantly contributed to Jewish-Christian dialogue through co-authored textbooks and edited volumes. He has lectured at institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of British Columbia.
