Dr. Joel B. Frey is an Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan's Ron and Jane Graham School of Professional Development with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He joined the faculty in 2019, focusing on redesigning the College of Engineering's first-year undergraduate program. His roles include curriculum development, sessional lecturing, and advancing competency-based assessment models. Dr. Frey holds a PhD (2012), B.E. in Electrical Engineering, and B.Sc. in Computer Science (2004), all from the University of Saskatchewan.
He previously worked as a consulting engineer at Amec Fost Wheeler (2012–2017) and ran Joel B Frey Consulting, specializing in stakeholder engagement and leadership training via True Colors® Seminars. Active in professional organizations, he serves in the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA) and the National Initiative on Capacity Building and Knowledge Creation for Engineering Leadership. Since 2018, he has been a member of the University of Saskatchewan’s Buffalo Circle as an ally to Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
Dr. Frey emphasizes interpersonal connections in teaching and prioritizes experiential learning. His research interests span engineering education innovation, curriculum modernization, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
