Joel Archer serves as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Theology at Asbury Theological Seminary, where he integrates philosophical rigor with theological inquiry. Holding a B.A. in Philosophy from Asbury University (2011), M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Saint Louis University (2014, 2017), an M.A. in Early Christian Studies from Notre Dame (2019), and completing a Ph.D. in New Testament at Duke University (expected 2025), his academic background bridges multiple disciplines.
Dr. Archer's research focuses on analytic theology, philosophy of religion, metaphysics, historical Jesus studies, and New Testament theology. His work addresses fundamental questions about divine action, miracles, and biblical interpretation through both historical and contemporary philosophical lenses. His scholarship demonstrates how philosophical methodology can illuminate theological concepts while engaging critically with biblical texts.
His recent publications span prestigious journals including Philosophical Studies, Religious Studies, and Journal for the Study of the New Testament, with his 2024 monograph The Problem of Divine Action in the World addressing theological and philosophical questions surrounding divine intervention. His work shows consistent engagement with both philosophical and theological communities through publications in specialized journals across both fields.
Dr. Archer actively participates in Asbury's Bilingually Delivered M.A. in Ministry program, reflecting his commitment to serving Spanish-speaking communities. Originally from Mendoza, Argentina, his cross-cultural perspective enriches his pedagogical approach and scholarly interests, particularly in making theological concepts accessible to diverse audiences.
