Avery Archer is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at The George Washington University, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2013) and has held academic positions at the University of Tennessee and GWU since 2013. His research focuses on epistemology, philosophy of action, and philosophy of mind, with secondary expertise in moral psychology and normativity theory.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University (2013), M.Phil. degrees from Columbia (2011) and the University of St Andrews (2008), an M.A. in Theological Studies from Harvard (2002), and a B.A. in Theology from Andrews University (2000). His scholarly work emphasizes questions about agnosticism, inquiry dynamics, and the cognitive underpinnings of practical reason.
Research interests span foundational issues in epistemology such as belief formation mechanisms, the nature of inquiry, and the relationship between desires and normative reasons. His recent work explores the questioning-attitude account of agnosticism and the cognitive architecture of practical intentions. Archer has published in leading journals including Synthese, Disputatio, and Philosophical Studies, with a forthcoming monograph The Attitude of Agnosticism (Cambridge University Press).
Teaching responsibilities include courses on symbolic logic, analytic philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of mind. He actively participates in professional service, serving as a referee for journals like Philosophical Studies and Analysis, and has organized conferences such as the Tennessee Value and Agency Conference.
