Prof. Joel Anderson is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Ethics Institute and the Research Institute for Philosophy and Religious Studies. He holds the chair in Moral Psychology & Social Philosophy and has been a faculty member since 2004, becoming a full professor in 2022. His research focuses on philosophical anthropology, ethics, and social theory, with expertise in autonomy, digital ethics, disability studies, and critical theory. Anderson has taught at Washington University in St. Louis (1995–2003) and completed his studies at Princeton University, Northwestern University, and Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.
Anderson’s research explores topics such as normativity in human agency, neuroethics, mutual recognition theory, and responses to hyper-complexity. His work bridges continental philosophy with applied ethics, addressing contemporary challenges such as governance in the digital age, human-centered AI, and institutional frameworks for open societies. Key themes include LGBTQQA+ mental health, developmental labels, and the ethical implications of disruptive technologies.
His recent publications analyze AI-mediated work environments, LGBTQ+ suicide prevention strategies, and the social cure properties of group dynamics.
