Joe Jarrett is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hawaii. His academic journey began with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan (1988) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from MIT (1993), followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan. He served as faculty at the University of Pennsylvania (1997–2005) before joining the University of Hawaii in 2006.
- B.S. in Chemistry, University of Michigan (1988)
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, MIT (1993)
Dr. Jarrett specializes in S-Adenosylmethionine (AdoMet)-dependent radical enzymes, focusing on iron-sulfur cluster assembly and biotin synthase mechanisms. His work explores how organic radicals enable biochemical transformations, particularly in microbial systems, and his lab investigates spectroscopic evidence for enzyme-bound intermediates and conserved residue roles in catalysis.
Recent publications highlight his research on antimycobacterial compounds targeting biotin synthesis, radical methylation cofactors, and structural characterization of biotin synthase intermediates. These studies span broad disciplines like Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Structural Biology, with subfields including Enzyme Inhibition, Radical SAM Enzymes, and Metabolic Pathways.
