Carsten Krebs is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Pennsylvania State University's Eberly College of Science, and serves as Associate Department Head for Chemistry Climate and Diversity. His research focuses on the mechanisms of iron-containing enzymes, particularly non-heme iron oxygenases and Radical-SAM enzymes. Using Mössbauer spectroscopy and complementary techniques, his lab investigates enzyme-catalyzed reactions involving iron cofactors, including dioxygen activation, C-H bond cleavage, and radical chemistry. Key research areas include iron-sulfur cluster enzymes, loline biosynthesis, and SARS-CoV-2 helicase mechanisms.
Research interests span Bioinorganic Chemistry, Enzymology, Biophysics, and Energy Research. Notable honors include AAAS Fellowship (2019), SBIC Early Career Award (2012), and the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry (2008). Collaborations with groups like Squire Booker's advance studies on Radical-SAM enzymes. His work bridges biochemical, kinetic, and spectroscopic approaches to unravel enzyme mechanisms at atomic resolution.
