Joe Ironside is a Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University. His research focuses on marine organisms, parasitology, genetics, and invasive species management. He has led over 9 externally funded projects since 2009, including initiatives on Chinese mitten crab control, cockle fisheries genetics, and marine infrastructure impacts. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to Life Below Water and Sustainable Cities.
Key projects include leading the £300k Natural Resources Wales project on Chinese mitten crab invasions (2023-2025) and the Royal Society-funded study on cockle mass mortality (2020-2021). He collaborates internationally on parasite discovery (e.g., Marteilia cocosarum) and genomic approaches to marine biodiversity.
Publications span 2003–2025, emphasizing genomic tools (e.g., long amplicon methods), invasion biology, and ecological impacts of human infrastructure. His work integrates field studies with molecular techniques to address conservation challenges in coastal ecosystems.
