Joe Cartwright is a Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford and a Senior Research Fellow at St Peter’s College. His research focuses on sedimentary basin processes, including fault propagation, South Atlantic Ocean formation, diagenesis, fluid flow dynamics, and carbon sequestration mechanisms. He has held roles at Cardiff University and Imperial College London, building specialized laboratories for 3D seismic interpretation and basin analysis.
His work integrates geological field studies with advanced computational modeling, particularly in understanding seal integrity for hydrocarbon reservoirs and CO2 storage. Current projects address polygonal fault systems, dyke swarm propagation, and fluid overpressure mechanisms in subsurface environments.
Cartwright has published extensively on topics such as mud volcano dynamics, evaporite flow behavior, and the interplay between tectonic and diagenetic processes. His methodologies emphasize quantitative approaches to seismic data analysis and subsurface fluid dynamics modeling.
- Research Highlights:
- Quantitative 3D seismic interpretation frameworks
- Carbon sequestration risk assessment models
- Mechanisms of fluid venting in layered basins
- Magmatic processes in dyke swarm systems
His contributions bridge fundamental geoscience and applied challenges in resource exploration and climate mitigation strategies.
