Joe Addington has served as Lecturer in Music and Director of the Afro-Cuban Music Ensemble at Pomona College since 2008, maintaining an active presence in Southern California's Afro-Cuban music community through weekly performances and academic leadership.

- Continuous field studies in Afro-Cuban music traditions (1988–present)
Research Focus: Specializing in Afro-Cuban drumming traditions with emphasis on the Batá Drum, Addington's work spans Olokun, Arara, Iyesa, Guiro, Bembe, Palo, Tumba Francesa, and Rumba. His scholarship integrates decades of fieldwork in Matanzas, Cuba, and apprenticeships with legendary masters, preserving endangered musical practices through performance-based pedagogy.
Awards:
- Durfee Foundation award supporting apprenticeship under Francisco Aguabella (1996-1999)
Professional Activities: Balancing academic work with international production roles, Addington has toured globally with Stevie Wonder since 2007 and served as production assistant for Jennifer Lopez's 40-country tour (2012), while mentoring students through the Afro-Cuban Music Ensemble's immersive cultural training.
Ensemble Leadership: As Director of Pomona College's Afro-Cuban Drumming Ensemble, he provides hands-on instruction in drum construction, maintenance, and performance techniques, creating a living laboratory for Afro-Cuban cultural transmission within the academic setting.
