Dr. Joe A. LaManna is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Marquette University. His research focuses on community and population ecology, particularly the role of biotic interactions in shaping biodiversity and ecosystem resilience under environmental change. He collaborates with social and environmental scientists to study socio-ecological systems.
Education:
- B.S., 2003, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
- Ph.D., 2015, University of Montana, Missoula, MT
- Post-doctoral Fellow, 2015–2018, Washington University in St. Louis, MO
Dr. LaManna investigates how species interactions—such as mutualisms, predation, and competition—mediate ecosystem responses to disturbances like wildfires and climate shifts. His work spans forest avian and tree communities, emphasizing cross-trophic dynamics, mycorrhizal symbiosis, and scaling local interactions to biogeographic patterns. He employs field experiments, observational datasets, and computational models.
His research leverages networks like MAPS and ForestGEO to analyze global biodiversity trends and ecosystem tipping points. Current projects examine conspecific negative density dependence in elevation gradients and wildfire-driven plant-pollinator dynamics.
Dr. LaManna mentors Ph.D. students and leads the LaManna Lab, which integrates empirical and theoretical approaches to ecological resilience.
