Dr. Sherman’s research centers on quantifying the environmental and health impacts of healthcare delivery through life cycle assessment. Her work spans anesthesia, surgery, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, aiming to create sustainable, high-value clinical care. She investigates how healthcare contributes to pollution and climate change—responsible for nearly 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions—and develops strategies for decarbonization and resilience.
Her recent publications emphasize healthcare emissions transparency, sustainable clinical pathways, and policy reform. Articles cover topics such as the carbon footprint of medical oxygen, environmental impacts of anesthesia and surgery, and the role of infection prevention in planetary health. She advocates for integrating sustainability into patient safety frameworks and professional ethics.
Dr. Sherman has been recognized with awards including the Certificate of Outstanding Recognition for Sustainability from Yale and an award from the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation. She is a member of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change and serves on the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative for Decarbonization of the U.S. Health Sector.
