James Kurfess, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine and holds dual director roles at Bridgeport Hospital: Director of Neuroanesthesia and Director of Quality and Safety for Anesthesiology. He is affiliated with Yale New Haven Health System and New York Medical College. His clinical practice focuses on neuroanesthesia for intracranial, spine, and neuroendovascular surgeries, obstetric anesthesia, and protocol development. He actively contributes to quality improvement initiatives and peer review processes.
Dr. Kurfess obtained his MD from New York Medical College in 2016. He completed his Anesthesiology residency at Yale School of Medicine, serving as Chief Resident in 2020, and a Neuroanesthesia fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital in 2021. His research interests include neuromonitoring advancements, perioperative glycemic management protocols, and surgical safety standards. He has published on neuromonitoring techniques and presented at institutions like UT Southwestern on EEG monitoring.
He is recognized for his pandemic response efforts, earning the 2022 Yale New Haven Health System Award for Frontline Healthcare during the Covid-19 crisis. His professional service includes leading committees such as the ERAS Committee (Yale–New Haven Health System), Obstetric Quality and Safety Committee, and Surgical Services Quality Committee. He maintains memberships in major organizations including the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care.
